When is popcorn like a non-renewable energy? When it becomes a scarce commodity! Our first year High School students explored the concept of non-renewable energy by participating in an interactive activity which was used to help visualize the effect of the use of non-renewable energy over time.
Divided into 3 “generations”, each generation had an opportunity to take as much popcorn as the desired within a set amount of time. The first generation had the whole bowl of popcorn to take from, the second generation had about half a bowl to take from and by the time the third generation arrived they were taking from what little remained in the bowl. The activity gave way to discussion on how topics such as population growth, overconsumption and waste affect non-renewable resources and in turn, current and future populations.

I nostri studenti del primo anno delle scuole superiori hanno esplorato il concetto di energia non rinnovabile partecipando a un'attività interattiva che è stata utilizzata per aiutare a visualizzare l'effetto dell'uso di energia non rinnovabile nel tempo.
Diviso in 3 "generazioni", ogni generazione ha avuto l'opportunità di ottenere tutti i popcorn che desiderava entro un determinato periodo di tempo. La prima generazione aveva a disposizione l'intera ciotola di popcorn, la seconda generazione circa la metà e la terza e ultima generazione aveva quel poco che era rimasto nella ciotola. L'attività ha dato il via a discussioni su come questioni come la crescita della popolazione, il consumo eccessivo e lo spreco influenzano le risorse non rinnovabili e, a loro volta, le popolazioni attuali e future.
